I was doing great. I was doubled up. The villain in this hand and I had tangled a few times. He kept putting in monster raises like $2.50 over the top of my $.75 pre-flop raise. I’d fold my suited ace or connectors. When this hand came up, I felt like I had a pretty good read on him. I felt like he was chasing and in the end I was pretty confident he had missed. I felt like my turn bet should have smoked out the drawing hands. Anything I could have done (besides folding on the river)?

OK, so I know it is weird to be the first one to comment on your own post, but I think I know what I did wrong. I think my mistake was my smallish bet on the turn. He had bet $3.30 making the pot $6.60. I raised only half the pot making it only $3.30 into a $13 pot for him, that’s laying him 4-to-1 odds. Now, he’s not 4-to-1 to hit his straight, he’s more like 6-to-1, but he’s got good implied odds.

If I had made a bet more like $10 at the turn, then he’s got to put in $7 into a $17 pot, a little worse than 2.5-to-1. Then he would have to wonder about whether his implied odds were that good.

And again, the river call was obviously dumb. I don’t know how many times I have to remind myself not to call all-in bets when I have top pair. Occasionally I’ll be right and be calling some moron who missed his flush or straight draw, but that generally won’t make up for all of the times I’m up against a much better hand.
